High School Exchange
The Program Rules We know you do not like rules, but for your safety you have to respect a few requirements if you wish to participate to this program:
- a. To respect the conditions imposed by the J1 visa status, which you will learn more about when applying for the program;
- b. To respect the federal, state and local laws of the US and those of the home town. According to these laws, the use of alcohol by people aged under 21, drug use or drug possession are illegal;
- c. To read and respect all the materials concerning safety, health, and the environment;
- d. To accept your placement in the host family, without any discrimination of race, religion or of skin color;
- e. To see yourself as member of the host family, to respect their rules and traditions and to accept the responsibilities you are given;
- f. To respect the rules of the high school where you study;
- g. To travel only with adult members of the host family, the local coordinator, or high school officials in group trips. Visits from the Romanian family are not encouraged during the academic year, except for the school year end festivity. Traveling back to Romania is not permitted during the school year;
- h. . Make sure you have access to at least 150 USD a month, from your parents, for personal expenses. Do not borrow money from the host family;
- i. Buying or driving a vehicle that requires a driving license is forbidden. Driving them is allowed only in presence of a certified instructor, only when taking classes for the acquiring a license.;
- j. If you have indicated in the application form that you are not a smoker, you need to stick with the decision throughout your stay in the US;
- k. If you have indicated in the application form that you are a smoker, you must respect the host family and the community rules regarding smoking. In most of the American states, communities and high schools, as it is illegal for students under a certain age to smoke or to possess cigarettes;
- l. The program ends 30 days after the last day of school and you need to return home within this time interval;
American Experience reserves the right to exclude from the program any student who does not respect the up-mentioned rules. In case parents decide to withdraw their children from the program before it ends, the paid taxes will not be refunded.
