Last year 130,000 students went to the States through the Work and Travel program. About 3,500 of them were from Romania..
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WORK AND TRAVEL PROGRAM
During the 60s the U.S. Department of State set up a series of programs through which young people from around the world had the opportunity to experience the American lifestyle for a specific period of time. What started as just a travel program evolved into a larger project, one called Work and Travel, when the Department of State realized that many of those who wanted to see America were also eager to earn some money.
The J-1 visa allows Summer Work and Travel students to travel and work legally in the United States during their summer school vacations. The program dates in Romania are June 15-October 30. You can work until October 1, then travel with the money you've earned for 30 additional days (as long as it does not prevent you from returning to school on time).
