In the United States, just like elsewhere in the world, income is taxable and in order to receive medical care you must have insurance otherwise you have to pay for all healthcare expenses out of your own pocket, which can be very expensive in the United States.
HEALTH INSURANCE
The American health system is completely different from the Romanian system, mainly in price. U.S. healthcare is extremely expensive and has to be covered by the patient. There is no such thing as Government support (there are a few exception, like for people with disabilities or people who have retired). If you do not have health insurance you will have to cover all of your expenses in the case of an accident or any type of medical intervention..
All participants that apply for the AE program will receive health insurance that meets U.S. State Department regulations. It is included in the program cost and is valid both on U.S. territory and in transit to and from the United States.
This insurance covers the costs of eventual medical treatments such as hospitalization, immediate return to home country for medical reasons, and dental emergencies, as well as loss of luggage, plane ticket, etc.
TAX RETURN
During your work commitment in the United States, tax withholdings such as state tax and federal income tax will be deducted from your paychecks. American Experience can recover these taxes and transfer them into your bank account. We recommend that that you have a US dollar bank account to avoid exchange rate losses.
The process of tax return may take between 30 to 90 days; it might even take up to 6 months for Medicare or Social Security taxes to be returned, but usually these are not withheld in the case of Work and Travel participants..
