Banks, money and transfers

Life in the USA is simpler thanks to banks. In most of the cases, you pay with checks or cards, seldom with cash.

  • Banks and ways of paying
You will most probably open two bank accounts, the first of which being the most important: Checking account You can usually spend the money from this account by using checks or, very frequently, by the magnetic card or the debit card. Any bank offers more types of checking accounts, varying on the amount of money you have to deposit, the service fee, the number of checks that can be filled in within a month, the additional cost of every off limit value check etc. Savings account It is a typical economy account, but with a higher interest than the checking account. And for this reason this one is worth opening.
  • Regardless of want you intend to do with the money, every bank has very well organized client service, and they have the experience of foreign students, therefore they know what is best for you.

  • Paychecks
Usually, the salary is paid by checks that you cash in at the issuing bank; in most of the cases, you get paid every two weeks. It is highly important to keep at least the last payslip from every employer, in order to so that you get refunded your taxes when you come back in Romania.

  • Money transfer
There are several ways to send money in Romania, among which: WESTERN UNION An electronic money-transfer system, with an agency network in 178 countries.
What do you need to know before transferring money? The sender (the student) must inform the addressee about the amount sent, the city and the country where the money is sent from. If wanted, he or she can also tell de addressee the control number of the transfer. They must also pay to Western Union the transfer fee which depends on the amount sent (the fee starts from 13 $). If the money is sent with the option “pay on delivery”, the sender will also have to pay an extra $10 fee. BANK ACCOUNT TRANSFER It is convenient for large amounts - thousands of dollars.
