The flight and useful luggage

A person can take up to 56 kg (2 x 23kg) for checked baggage and another 10 kg as carry luggage. Checked baggage is handed in in the Romanian airport and picked up at the destination airport in the USA. It is recommended that the carry luggage comprises only strictly necessary things for approximately 2 days (in case the airline company loses the luggage). Do not forget to write on every baggage you hand in a contact address and a phone number, which can be used by the airline company in case your luggage gets lost! The address you write should be the address where you will be living in the YOU’RE YOUR employer’s address or any other address you can get your luggage back from.

In your carry luggage you should have your passport (do not tear the DS off the passport, otherwise you risk being sent back to Romania), some money and a pen, because you will have to complete some forms during the flight.
Useful luggage:
  • Alarm clock;
  • Driving license;
  • Basic medicine;
  • English-Romanian and Romanian-English dictionary;
  • Favorite CDs / books;

Useless luggage:

  • Any type of electronic device is useless in the USA, because the input there is of 110V, the frequency is 60 Hz, and the plugs have a different shape. Still, if you really want to take something, there are adaptors and transformers for European electronics.
  • You must take into account the climate zone you are going to live in, in order to take adequate clothing
  • Do not take many clothes because you will most certainly buy a lot there
  • Do not take food, there is an interdiction on carrying on food or seeds
The I-94 form The I-94 form During the flight, you will be asked to complete two short forms: I-94 and another one concerning customs and food (you will declare not carrying any). The I-94 form, the paper about food, the passport and I-20 are checked at the customs, at the entrance. The envelope containing the I-20 is taken out from your passport and instead, they will staple (or simply place) a part of the I-94. Theoretically, you should return the I-94 when you first get out of the USA, so do not lose it.
